Using a face mask regularly can boost your skincare routine, improving the look and feel of your skin in 20 minutes or less. Not only do these masks provide a relaxing pampering session, but they also have practical benefits. These include deep cleansing and targeting specific skincare concerns such as dehydrated skin, the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles, and breakouts.

The most common types of face masks are clay masks, exfoliating masks, peeling masks, and sheet masks. Clay masks revitalize and smooth the skin by using natural ingredients to unclog pores, remove excess oil, and shed dead skin cells. They are ideal for those with oily or acne-prone skin. Exfoliating masks and peeling masks are commonly used to brighten dull skin and improve texture. Exfoliating masks use chemical or physical exfoliation to slough away dead skin cells, while a peeling mask must first harden before gently peeling away the outer skin layer. Sheet masks provide intense hydration and nourishment by infusing the skin with serums and other active ingredients.

For whatever your skin type or concerns, there is a face mask that can help. Try a hydration mask to give your skin an instant boost of nourishment or apply an overnight mask before bed to soothe dryness and recharge your skin throughout the night. Use a mattifying clay mask if you have oily or acne-prone skin and a gentle enzymatic peeling mask if you have sensitive skin. A firming mask may be best for those with mature skin and wrinkles. 

This will depend on your skin type and your product’s directions, but most face masks can be used one to three times a week. Those with sensitive skin or dry skin may only need to use one a week, whereas normal or oily skin may use one up to three times.

Your skin can’t receive the benefits of a face mask if it’s not properly cleansed. Before applying a face mask, use a gentle face wash to create a clean canvas by removing any impurities, excess oil, makeup, or dirt. You can then start applying the mask to your skin. Avoid the eye area and don’t just stop at the face—apply it to your neck and décolleté as well. Then, you can relax! Most face masks should be left on for around 15 to 20 minutes, but always follow the directions on the label to ensure you are receiving the full benefits.
