Toners and Essences - Sensitive Skin

A toner can be alcohol-based, glycerin-based, or water-based. It is used to prep and smooth the skin by balancing its pH levels and removing any dirt or makeup your cleanser didn’t. An essence is usually water-based. It is most commonly used to hydrate, brighten, and soothe the skin. While a toner is typically swiped on with a cotton pad, an essence is gently pressed into the skin. Though it isn’t necessary, you can use a toner and essence together, applying the essence right after the toner.

You may hear that toner is an optional step in the skincare routine, but if you want to ensure your skin gets that extra-deep cleansing, then it’s a must. Toner helps complete the cleansing process, removing any last bit of dirt, grime, or makeup from washing your face. It also helps restore your skin’s pH levels, which means your skin stays hydrated and less likely to get irritated. Toners may also remove excess oil and minimize the appearance of pores.

You should use toner directly after cleansing but before applying eye creams, serums, or moisturizers.

How do I choose the best toner or essence for my skin?

The right toner or essence for you will depend on your skin type.

• If you have dry or dehydrated skin, go for the Essential Toner with hydrating and soothing properties that prevent excess dryness and restore radiance.
• If you have oily or acne-prone skin, try an exfoliating toner, like Active Pureness Toner, that clears and minimizes the pores.
• If you have sensitive skin prone to redness, the Remedy Spray Toner can be reapplied throughout the day and is formulated with soothing and refreshing ingredients.
• If you have combination skin, you may benefit from either the Essential Toner or Active Pureness Toner.
• If you have aging skin, help give it a healthy and youthful appearance with the Skin Regimen Lx Microalgae Essence that deeply hydrates and illuminates the skin.

You can use a toner in both your morning and evening routine but you should aim to use it at least once per day after you’ve cleansed the skin. If you have dry skin that needs hydration throughout the day, try incorporating a toner spray that can be easily reapplied, like the Hydramemory Face Mist.

No, you should not replace your cleanser with a toner. Cleansers and toners have unique roles in a skincare routine that complement each other well. A cleanser is used to deeply clean dirt, makeup, sweat, and oil from the surface of the skin, while a toner is used to balance the texture of your skin. Using both will help you achieve a cleaner, more balanced complexion.
